Rocky road is one of the greatest flavour combinations to have ever been invented, and it all started here in Victoria, Australia in 1853. Yep its totally Aussie, mate! Although, maybe when you delve a little deeper, you’ll realise the flavour combination was a little more crafty than crafted.
The story goes, Australian chocolate was relatively cheap. So some clever Europeans decided they would introduce Australia to the superior chocolate that they had been enjoying for years. However, the long journey to Australia wasn’t kind on the superior chocolate, seeing much of it spoiled by the time it got here.
In an attempt to ensure the expensive chocolate didn’t go to a complete waste, it was melted and combined with some of the Australian chocolate along with locally grown nuts and some other fillers to disguise the flavour. And it became a hit!
Apparently, the name was derived from the journey the chocolate confectionery would then take to get the finished product out to the wealthy working force at the gold fields… the “rocky road”. However, we at Maddison Lea like to think it was more to do the with the chocolate desserts finished appearance with nuts and fillers, sticking up from the chocolate, resembling the look of a rocky road. Either way, Rocky Road was born and perfected to remain a popular chocolate treat still to this day.
